We arrived at Cabañas Yanuncay, our campground in Cuenca that is recommended on iOverlander, at 3-45pm. It costs $10 per night but has 220 volt power, water, hot showers and a kitchen. We were warmly welcomed by Maria and there was only one other camper there but the occupants were out and about.

We ended up staying for 11 nights over Christmas and New Year because we had a great time in Cuenca. 17 years ago we only had time for a few hours one afternoon here during our tour back then. We realised that there's a great deal more to see. Of course the Christmas and New Year festivities were also special.

The campground is 4km from the centre. We could have taken a bus but we just decided to walk in every time and ended up walking almost 100km or 60 miles whilst we were there! The first time we walked in just after we arrived and spent 3.5 hours wandering around and taking photos. We also encountered the amazing jumping dog a couple of houses along the street from the campground who greeted whenever we walked past!! (see video)

On Christmas Eve we left just after 8am and spent over 9 hours watching the famous Pase del Niño Viajero procession with almost 100 decorated vehicles with lots of dancing and marching bands. It was a great atmosphere and everyone was happy to pose for photos. We went for a late lunch to sit down and give our feet a rest and then went back out to watch more of the procession.

Fantastic Christmas parade in Cuenca!

It was such an exhausting day that we stayed in for the next two days and phoned up our families to wish them Happy Christmas and chatted to other campers for hours.
