Our plan to drive over the Paso San Francisco within a week has to be cancelled. After our trip to the Balcón del Pissis several bad weather fronts are rolling over us with lots of rain and even snow. The pass is closed for a few days and so we sit out the bad weather for another 17 days.
After staying for more than 3 weeks on the Argentinian side of the Paso San Francisco the weather is finally good enough to go over the 4,725 m high pass to Chile. The 129 km long drive between the border posts of Argentina and Chile through the amazing volcano landscape and past the emerald-green Laguna Verde is one of the most spectacular in South America! Of course the altitude is a challenge for us and Winnietwo but most of the road is paved and in very good condition. Just before Copiapó we are taking a detour along the Río Copiapó to the Embalse Lautaro – a reservoir that provides all the water for the many vineyards in the valley.
